The imagery I invoke while reading Lovecraft is unlike any other author I've read. I have been reading him since I was 14, and it has never, ever lost it's power, and it has never been quite the same with any other writer. Meeting another fan at an SF convention is always a, "Ah....you know...." And they always do!

“All art that is not mere storytelling or mere portraiture is symbolic...If you liberate a person or a landscape from the bonds of motives and their actions, causes and their effects...it will change under your eyes, and become a symbol of infinite emotion, a perfected emotion, a part of the Dark Divine Essence.”

I quite agree! I have always found his style of story-telling to be hypnotic, I have to say that is the best term I can think of for it right now. It's a delight for the senses. Hearing them in audio format by a decent reader takes that up a notch for me, like an uncanny symphony through the steady stream of atmospheric movements that the tale undergoes.

Interesting coincidence, I just saw and clicked on this thread while listening to the soundtrack of The Beyond, a metaphysical horror movie from 1981. (The movie itself is about a hotel built on one of seven doorways to Hell.)
